Mark Lum MA MSc is an independent consultant focusing on Carrier Ethernet, Optical, Metro, FTTx and Storage networks and services, with experience spanning SDH/SONET, WDM/OTN, ATM, MPLS and Ethernet technologies and their associated global standards development. His clients include service providers, equipment manufacturers, start-ups and the investment community.

Working previously for RHK as program director, he was responsible for research and analysis covering the optical network markets in Europe. His program delivered strong insight for clients, regarding specific business issues, technology evolution and service provider dynamics.

Prior to joining RHK, Mark worked for Nortel Networks as Portfolio Solutions Manager focusing on market requirements, service applications and solutions for next-generation optical metro networks. Previously, he worked for Tektronix as Telecoms/TV Market Development Manager and began his career in the Harlow R&D labs of ITT-STL, developing the first 140M, 565M and 2Gbit/s optical systems.

Mark has also taken an active role in standardisation, leading Tektronix' participation at ITU and ETSI, chairing an experts' committee at ITU-T as Rapporteur and working as technical editor for several SDH standards. Mark studied Natural & Electrical Sciences at Cambridge University and was awarded his MSc in Telecommunications by the University of Essex.

Described as a strong, insightful advocate and prolific author, Mark has developed and published many papers on carrier network evolution, market trends, broadband network performance, technology and service topics; he is a well-known and frequently-requested speaker and chair at industry conferences.
